Satellite babies are children born in the U.S. and then sent back to their mother country. This is due to lack of a support system and language barriers. The effects on the child range from social-emotional to educational. Moving to China is a distressing experience for the child. It detaches an instinctive mother-child bond, essential for the child’s future emotional health. The social impacts are more evident. The grandparents’ inability to help the child meet the stages of discipline leads the child to misbehave. The general effects include insecurity, challenged identity, and inability to socialize. More severely, depression and anxiety. Educationally, the child misses the critical language acquisition stage and could experience alienation within the American classroom due to language barriers (H.Qing, personal communication, November 23, 2024).

The public school system offers three main programs for your child: Dual Language, English Language Learner (ELL) programs, and regular classes. Dual Language programs help children learn a foreign language as well as English. Chinese parents often enroll their non-English speaking children in hopes they learn Chinese culture and English, but if all the students speak Chinese in class, they won’t have the opportunity to practice English and thus interfere with their learning. For ELL programs, the program varies but if it translates everything, the child won’t have a chance to practice English, hindering their progress. Though some students do succeed in these classes, it is recommended to transfer your child to regular classes if they aren’t improving. Reading is one of the most important ways to build up a child’s English, helping with pronunciation, reading comprehension, and vocabulary recognition. English is a skill that is built upon continuously so it’s important to build a habit of reading. Parents can also seek additional resources from teachers, libraries, and the internet.

In addition to grades, building relationships is also crucial. Parents can help their child make friends by not forcing the child to talk but rather encouraging the child to find peers of similar interests and asking the teacher to support the child in school and discourage bullying. Parents can also go on trips with their child to help bond with them and help the child stay open minded to new surroundings. Parents also often bribe their child, but this can reinforce bad behavior and invalidate the child’s feelings. Instead, parents can listen to the child and let them understand their feelings are valid, comfort them, listen to their view of the situation, and punish reasonably.

Economic stress and a lack of adequate child care in the United States play a critical role in driving parents to send their children to be raised by their grandparents in China. In New York’s Chinatown, where many Asian American families rely primarily on their small businesses for income, most parents work far beyond the standard 9 to 5. However, by reallocating funding towards initiatives such as lowering rent and mortgages, helping small businesses, and lowering inflation, parents won’t have to spend as many hours working in order to ensure they have the financial ability to meet basic needs, including food, clothing, and housing, thus enabling them to spend more time with their children. Furthermore, due to their long working hours, most daycares, which only run until 3pm, are not a practical option for many Asian American parents. Allocating more funding towards daycares, however, would allow for more staff as well as longer hours and higher quality of service, thus making daycares a more viable childcare option for Asian American families. In Luxembourg, for instance, daycares run from 7am to 7pm, and families receive waivers for daycare costs based on their income (Childcare, 2024).

Promoting open-mindedness is also crucial in preventing parents from sending their children back to China. For instance, by not necessarily adhering to cultural practices of grandparents caring for grandchildren, parents can be more willing to seek services such as daycares. It is also crucial to ensure one has the resources to raise a child before choosing to do so. Oftentimes, once an individual reaches a certain age, they, or their parents, may pressure them to have children. By ensuring that one is in a mental and financial position to have a child, however, one can more effectively raise their child rather than send their child to China to be raised. Lastly, by voting, individuals can make their needs heard and addressed by community leaders. In 2022, Asian American voter turnout rates in District 49 were around 15% (A CASE, n.d.). Voting, however, would enable individuals to make their needs, including their financial concerns, addressed, preventing them from having to send their children to China to be raised.

By understanding these consequences and solutions, you can take meaningful actions to support your child.
