APPLESEED YOUTH LEADERSHIP

Appleseed is a youth-led initiative operating under the Parents Group of New York and is dedicated to fostering youth leadership and civic involvement. In close collaboration with PGNY, the Appleseed team develops and runs a range of programs and events that support immigrant families in underserved communities.

OUR PROGRAMS

In our Reading Club, student leaders mentor elementary school students through guided group sessions, book discussions, and passage analysis, helping them strengthen comprehension, expand vocabulary, and cultivate a lifelong love of reading.

Our student-led Chess Club teaches problem-solving, patience, and strategic thinking. Students learn from basic moves to advanced tactics, preparing them for competitions and life challenges.

Student leaders design and run our Math Competition Club, introducing elementary schoolers to advanced mathematical concepts, collaborative problem-solving, and Math Kangaroo preparation.

Our Policy Team gives high school students the opportunity to take the lead on civic engagement. They research pressing educational and economic issues, interview local political and educational leaders, and organize community outreach in South Brooklyn, advocating for meaningful change. Past projects have included research on satellite babies and proposals to dismantle the Federal Department of Education.

High schoolers on our Education Team work with the tutoring service Yanyue Class to foster a positive learning environment for elementary and middle schoolers, boosting their academic confidence as they prepare for standardized exams.

With PGNY, the Appleseed team hosts EduTalk, a series of biweekly online and in-person seminars featuring professionals from a variety of fields. These sessions guide parents on supporting their children’s mental health and navigating high school and college applications.
